H!P Profiles: Berryz Koubou

Front Row L to R: Miyabi Natsuyaki, Momoko Tsugunaga, Risako Sugaya
Middle Row L to R: Saki Shimizu, Yurina Kumai, Maiha Ishimura
Back Row L to R: Maasa Sudo, Chinami Tokunaga

Tsunku during this time wanted to do something more with floundering H!P Kids that were there and his original plan was to have a revolving group for them all (which included the new C-ute members).  Though for some reason, Tsunku ditched the idea and just took 8 of the members and created a group for them and named them Berryz Koubou.  While they were vocally unstable during their early days they were the kids group for a while.  Unfortunately, when 21-ji Made no Cinderella was released, Maiha Ishimura announced her graduation to return to a normal life leaving the 7 to push forward without her

Bottom Row L to R: Risako Sugaya, Miyabi Natsuyaki
Middle Row: Chinami Tokunaga, Momoko Tsugunaga, Yurina Kumai
Top Row: Maasa Sudo, Saki Shimizu

Ever since Maiha left, the group DID push on without any new members or other members leaving and marks as one of the groups that still are active within H!P today!  All of the girls went through puberty and they all sound unique which is something Tsunku never really expected (I bet).  They would go on for quite a long time before in 2015, they would go and announced their indefinite hiatus, which they totally deserve for being the longest standing group (with no member changes or loss).

Style of Music: To me, Berryz has always been that group to be given strange songs to deal with and see what and how they would deal with it because they got a wide selection of genres thrown in their discography.  They’ve done strange songs (Yuke Yuke Monkey Dance), sexy songs (WANT!), and some other stuff.  They are just the random group of H!P

This is the group’s debut single “Anata Nashi de wa Ikite Yukenai” with all the members in tact!

“Special Genera~tion” is probably the group’s most well-known song and for good reasons because it really showed the capabilities out of all 8 girls at the time…plus the song was just damn good!

Finally, this is the group’s PV for “Asian Celebration” kind of making the transition to the electro style H!P would dive into.

This is “Love together!” the final PV the group would release together.

Other Things to Mention:

Berryz is currently the group that has the oldest members in it (yes technically longer than Reina and Sayu!

Overall: I’ve always thought Berryz was the weird group ever since their debut and it really hasn’t changed over the years.  What did change was the vocals because back then it was really only Yurina, Risako, Miyabi, and Momoko…but in recent times, the remaining three other members: Chinami, Saki, and Maasa have started to step it up more ^_^.  I really do like the group and their songs have mostly been wins for me.  With them finally disbanded, I hope the girls will go onto bigger and better things!  They sure left a mark in the company!

1. Kowarenai Ai ga Hoshii no

Weird that they chose to begin Petit Best 4 with such a weak song like Kowarenai Ai ga Hoshii no from 7AIR which was comprised of Rika Ishikawa, Ai Takahashi, Masae Ohtani, Mai Satoda, Mika Todd, Risa Niigaki, and Atsuko Inaba!  HOWEVER, this song was honestly sliced in half further by having Rika, Ai-chan, Masae, and Mai only singing and the other three being MCs (as in rap quips here and there…annoying)!  I mean if it wasn’t for that, the song could’ve been interesting because the 4 main vocalists sound really good ^^.  Still with the pushback of 3 of the members, I was over this very quickly.

2. GET UP! Rapper

SALT5 (Ai Kago, Aya Matsuura, Natsumi Abe, Makoto Ogawa, Yuki Maeda) was a really odd line-up because of all the vocalists involved (especially the only true newcomer to the shuffles that year, Yuki Maeda, who was making a name for herself as the Enka gal).  Their song was pretty much Tsunku’s take on hip-hop and it was quite interesting.  I love the song’s flow and the chorus justs pumps like crazy!  Though Ayaya has such a weird tone in this song that it just somehow works!  It’s definitely one of those songs that I LOVE!

The other shuffle song belongs to 11WATER which had Kaori Iida, Mari Yaguchi, Miki Fujimoto, Nozomi Tsuji, Hitomi Yoshizawa, Asami Konno, Megumi Murata, Asami Kimura, Hitomi Saito, Ayumi Shibata, and Ayaka Kimura.  I have to say, that out of the three, this actually felt like a shuffle song (I mean SALT5 was too, but they felt more like an epic unit that should’ve continued!).  I actually liked the song’s ska feel and hearing prominent members made me smile (especially Miki’s voice).  The only thing that kind of made me annoyed was Tsunku and his ~sriracha, sriracha~ line (that’s what it sounded like to me).  Beyond that, it was a great track and seeing some action from the lesser known members was cool too!

4. Hare Ame Nochi Suki♥

So like I’ve said before, Morning Musume by this time JUST added the 6th Generation and Tsunku decided the group was getting a bit too big so he decided to split em up into two sub-units and keep em that way for a little while.  Sakuragumi was comprised of Aibon, Ai-chan, Gaki, Kame, Nacchi, Konkon, Yossie, and Marippe.  Like I said at the time, the song was quite something and this song is really sentimental.  I love it’s slow tempo and the emotion from all the girls, especially Eri who was the only gal from the 6th Gen featured here!  It just sounded so heartfelt and also was another favorite from the year!

5. Ai no Sono ~Touch My Heart!~

On the flipside of the coin, Otomegumi’s song comes next which had the other members: Kaorin, Sayu, Reina, Nono, Makochan, Mikitty, and Charmy.  Now to my eyes they kind of didn’t work very well together because they all have such signature voices that they didn’t really clash together.  It shows with their first song Ai no Sono.  This song is dirty, but it’s so catchy at the same time that it kind of cancels it out for the most part.  It was a bit weird that I heard more from Reina, Rika, Miki, and Makoto more than the other three (especially more than Kaori who had the deepest and sexiest voice of the unit).  I still find this way up there on my all-time favorite H!P songs though (plus I can sing it, I especially LOVE trying to pull off Miki’s lines!).

Getting into the units that really lasted one (or in this case two) singles, we start with ZYX which had Marippe as the leader with Momoko, Maimi, Erika, Megumi, and Saki as the Kids as members.  I mean if I was introduced to this when this came out I’d prolly dislike it because of all the untrained voices in the unit…however it’s 2013 and I’ve really known this song for about a year.  I was shocked to see how much Captain and Ume-chan was pushed in this unit because they would later be kind of pushed back for unknown reasons (Captain is an amazing dancer and Erika…well she was just forgotten!).  Song was quite simple, but it’s energetic and it suits with all the girls in said unit.  ZYX was interesting group and I kind of wished they had continued on, but y’know.

7. SEXY NIGHT ~Wasurerarenai Kare!~

ROMANS was quite a short stint and it once again surprised me they never went further than they did (or got a revival out of it).  SEXY NIGHT is sung by Mari Yaguchi, Rika Ishikawa, Ayaka Kimura, Hitomi Saito, and Mai Satoda.  Though like Otomegumi and 7AIR, it was clearly shown that the popular members got to sing while the others were shoved in the back.  For being a suave and debonair kind of song, SEXY NIGHT is actually kind of cool to listen to (besides the lack of Boss Saito and Coconuts Ayaka).  Even though I would’ve rather seen Rika in the back, Mari and Mai did very well!…though I don’t think I would ~cry, cry in the bed~.  Not a bad song though!

Reina, Airi, and Miyabi were the members of Aa! and like ROMANS, lasted one single as well.  Their lead track, FIRST KISS makes an appearance and this was a good choice for it to come after “SEXY NIGHT” because they in the same genre, except this song isn’t sexy xD.  It was surprising to see Reina lead a unit considering her new she was to H!P, but this was good.  As for Airi, she was impressive!  I mean her voice was standing out a lot and it was no wonder why she impressed many people back then.  As for Miyabi, she was barely noticeable xD.  Though I have to say that this must’ve impressed Tsunku so much that he paired Miya and Airi together (for Buono! and later on Aa! 2).

9. Uwaki na Honey Pie

Moving onto the units pre-H!P Kids, we get a new Country Musume song which might have surprised some people seeing that Rika had left the unit and Konkon and Mikitty took her place while a BRAND NEW member joined: Miuna Saitou.  This song sold everything for me because this is one of my ALL time favorite H!P songs hands down.  I mean, no offense to Country Musume, but this song was such a 180 for them because they were so Country and then sugary cute before this happened.  This great parapara song, was different and fresh for the group and it suited all the vocals (even Konkon and Asami’s more cute vocals). Even new member Miuna had such great vocals in this song that she was kind of like that missing piece but of course the spotlight was really on Mai and Miki but I’m ok, the line distribution was quite good!  Gawd this song is great!

10. Chance of LOVE

OH GAWD, the SAXOPHONE that opens this up made me so happy (though I did side-eye Tsunku introducing the song).  I think at this point, Tsunku was really making MK the test subjects, because their sound was kind of changing all over the place but the members took it quite smoothly.  Though at the same time, Shibata was still kind of the apple of Tsunku’s eyes so she got most of the lines while Masae was 2nd (but VERY far behind) with Saito and Murata taking the back.  Still the song was sexual but it’s not their most sexiest song to date.  It was good though.

So on the previoust Petit Best, Petitmoni was revived for the 3rd Generation which consisted of Yossie, Makochan, and Coconuts Ayaka.  WOW WOW WOW is a Petit Best exclusive originally and it was a change of sound because the song was more rock-based.  As a song that’s really heavy and energetic, the vocals were OK, but they weren’t at their best.  Makochan was shaky in this song while Yossie and Ayaka were just kind of here and there.  It’s definitely a song that’s MUCH preferred sung live than the studio version but at least we get the final hurrah from them.

12. Minimoni Kazoe Uta ~Ofuro Version~

If you recount the time, Mari had left and Ai-chan joined this bizarre and wild group, but this is the second single with her in the group.  HOWEVER, during this time, Minimoni became really more of an educational music group.  Their last A-side explained the areas of Japan and this song was teaching you how to count.  Really Tsunku?  This song is so wrong to be on a Petit Best period…but the other song would be just as whack xD.  The only solos are done by Mikapon and Nono and they’re just counting in both Japanese and English (hearing Tsuji going from eleven to twenty is lulzy).  I don’t know but I loathed this short era of Minimoni and this song just was ughhhhhhh.

13. Haha to Musume no Duet Song

Going into the soloists, we go into Nacchi’s debut which was a collaboration with Keiko Yosumi (who was the Okeisan).  I thought it was going to be a sappy ballad, but Nacchi was smart and made this a pop/rock kind of ditty and I kind of really liked this combination!  It did feel like they crammed some of the lyrics together in the verses, but this song is really fresh and was a good move for Natsumi to debut with.

Wait, Yuko is still doing solo stuff? Yeah, it’s kind of strange actually because if I was a fan back then, I probably would be like Yuko is still doing music?!?  It’s a mid-tempo track and actually I kind of enjoyed the song for its laidback sound and surprisingly strong vocals from Yuko herself!  I really liked her singing the chorus (especially the last run through).  It was a surprising song that I really enjoyed from her and is probably my favorite amongst the soloists!

15. Tokyo Kirigirisu

Yay! Yuki Maeda finally gets to have a solo song.  Like I said, Yuki was pushed as the Enka H!P member.  As this is her 4th A-side, Tokyo Kirigirisu was quite an impressive song amongst the various tracks on the album.  Her voice is so impressive especially against all the other singers on the album, she has such good vibrato and emotes almost perfectly with this song.  It might be a turnoff for H!P fans, but Enka fans would really love this…she was so underrated >.<

16. Natsu LOVE Romance

The other brand new track on the album, Natsu LOVE Romance is kind of a get-together of all the members (sans Kei, Aya, and Maki (which is a bit strange) and the H!P Kids).  It was very surprising that Tsunku managed to give EVERYONE a solo line in the song yet keep it together!  I was also surprised that he put the effort into the group lines like fitting MK together, Country+Coconuts together, and etc.  Add that this song is quite a fun song to listen to and great to listen for the 27 voices that worked on this song!  It was just a great hurrah of what I consider the H!P of the past (or the real golden era of H!P).  Though Tsunku trumps this song later on though xD

17. Shabondama (asia mix)

Closing the album out is an unfortunate remix of one of my favorite Morning Musume songs, Shabondama.  True to the tag of the remix, it does have a much Asian tone to it and all, but the flow is ruined by it as well.  It just doesn’t have as good of an impact to me at all and I kind of just wished they stopped with the remixes on Morning Musume songs…can we just have the songs as they are?

Tracks Recommended

  • Uwaki na Honey Pie
  • Ai no Sono ~Touch My Heart!~
  • GET UP! Rapper
  • Hare Ame Nochi Suki♥
  • Tokyo Kirigirisu

Strange to say, but this is my FAVORITE Petit Best (at least in the first 7).  I mean a big portion of the songs chosen are all time favorites for me and even though there were some slip ups of the songs.  Listening to the album, it really showcased the H!P of old and new and I loved the songs that I honestly did love xD.  Yeah not much could be said about this awesomeness, except one thing: Why is there like no Ayaya or Gocchin on this album?  I mean I know that Maki’s “Scramble” and Aya’s “GOOD BYE Natsuo” is on the DVD but why where they absent basically cept for the shuffle songs…THEY WEREN’T EVEN ON “Natsu LOVE Romance”…WTH  9/10

Let’s talk about the Kenshuusei and their “test”

So the Kenshuusei just had their tests and the results are in but there are other girls I wanna talk about and of course see what I think of them (also kind of based on their first episode of their show!).  So let’s talk about them by chronology of them!

Rie Kaneko

As the oldest member of the Kenshuusei she had a lot to live up for as the leader and all.  Riichan seems to be a really polished gal (almost to the levels of Karin but you know).  She performed Gocchin’s “Daite yo! PLEASE GO ON” and she actually did well and her deeper tone really stood out amongst the various higher pitched members!  She does seem shy and one of the blog pictures from the performance is kind of unflattering…but she did well

Karin Miyamoto

While she didn’t take part in the test, Karin performed with Juice=Juice of course and she did well.  Like the other J=J members, I don’t see them being Kenshuusei members for very much longer, but they still are for some strange reason.  She’s become kind of like the face for the group and she’s got a great voice on her (second to another). Can’t wait to see her graduate!

Sayuki Takagi

Sayubee is another who didn’t take part of the test due to her being in Juice=Juice.  To me, she’s becoming more and more interesting as she delves into the group further.  Her voice has edge to it and her dancing is quite strong.  She just suddenly popped on my radar and it’s strange she’s doing it now rather than back when she joined as an Egg!

Nanami Tanabe

Ahhh the former SCE! girl comes up next.  I love that she somehow managed to continue being a Kenshuusei and it paid off because the fans chose her performance to be the best one!  Strange though because she sung C-ute’s “Campus Life ~Umarete Kite Yokatta~.  That song bored me to death, but Tanapyon actually sung it nicely albeit a little high.  She totally deserved that win though and she gets a solo at the next Kenshuusei performance!

Kurumi Yoshihashi

Next came the girls that entered right after the program’s name changed from Eggs to Kenshuusei and these next three girls were supposed to be announced in March but was pushed back due to the earthquake at that time.  Kurumin was someone I paid attention to, but was quickly forgotten once the later members joined up.  At the test, she performed a Momosu B-side (strange), “Sono Bamen de Bibiccha Ikenai jan!!”.  The song isn’t meant to be sung solo, but Kurumi did the best she could and it wasn’t bad actually…vocals were away from the mic a couple of times, but she has potential!

Natsumi Taguchi

At first Tagucchi really didn’t to much for me, but in the last year she really has risen up and started getting better!  At the test she performed “Aitai Lonely Christmas” and like Tanapyon, her voice while a bit higher than what I expected, she sung it very well!  I wish I had more to say, but I don’t know too much about her.

Ayano Hamaura

I’ve said this before about Hamachan, but this girl should definitely be part of S/mileage because her voice is just perfect in that group!  It even showed when she performed the oddly chosen Berryz Koubou song, “Arigatou! Otomodachi.”.  She definitely sugarcoated that performance and it wasn’t bad, but it just further cements the need for Tsunku to add her to S/mileage.

Aina Otsuka

Tsukapon REALLY stepped out last year with her surprising vocals that really stepped her game up and led to her inclusion into Juice=Juice and it’s really amazing to see how far she came.  From being so close to joining Morning Musume to now, she really has endured a lot!  Currently she is my Oshi in the Kenshuusei but, she might be graduating soon, so time to look for a new favorite XD

Rena Ogawa

I will admit, I knew who Aina and Minami Mogii when they joined, but when Renako was added alongside, I just kind of brushed her aside and paid more attention to the other two girls.  Nowadays, she’s actually a member I keep a watch out for because she’s gotten pretty suddenly and her test performance of Momosu’s “Furusato” actually impressed me.  Then again, anyone who could sing better than Koharu Kusumi’s take…is already a win in my book!

Fuyuka Kosuga

Still the only member to go from a major group to a trainee, Fuuchan has been a mysterious member.  I mean she (and Rise) took a 4 month hiatus from performing.  She’s got some willpower to continue after all the drama that happened when she joined as a sub-member to S/mileage.  It was also great to see her return to performing with this test which was taking on Momosu’s “Suki na Senpai”.  Her voice is better, but it’s still on the lower half when compared to the other girls.  I would love to see her rejoin S/mileage because it clearly shows that she misses em!

Akari Uemura

At one point in time, Aarii was my oshi (before Aina blew me away).  She is the weakest link in Juice=Juice, but she actually has the looks to look sexy if she wanted (weird right?).  There’s just something about her that says that she has confidence and the right attitude for a “cool” look Tsunku is looking for with the group.  I was always hoping she’d join a group and now she’s with my other two oshi?!? MY LIFE RIGHT NOW!

Mizuki Murota

Tsunku was kind of blippy with adding members here so one by one they came along.  Murotan is quite cool!  In the show, she’s really silly and she has a great sense of humor to her that really would balance a group out.  Her test performance was of Aa!’s “FIRST KISS” was REALLY good and she can hold a tune quite strongly.  I have to say if there was someone of the Kenshuusei (that isn’t J=J) I wish was in a group…this girl would be it! (maybe next to Kaneko).

Rise Okamura

Like Fuuchan, Okamuun has been absent as well for the same allotted time and unfortunately we didn’t know if she was still a member until recently.  She missed the test however, but it seems like she might be present at the next Kenshuusei concert.  Before that, Okamura actually had impressive vocals and caught my attention, so I hope she returns soon!

Riko Yamagishi

All the members from here on out are members I’ve never heard until now!  Riko’s test performance was probably my personally least favorite because she was WAY off the mark in vocals in her take on C-ute’s “Kono Machi”…it was really unfortunate to listen to and I hope Tsunku caught it and could train her more!

Minami Nomura

If I did have to choose my favorite Kenshuusei, Minamina would be at the top because she’s just so adorable and she actually quite rocked her test with S/mileage’s “Yumemiru 15sai”.  However, she did screw up royally doing Sakitty’s high note in the verses.  Besides that, she did VERY well and minus that slip, I would personally say she did the best xD

Tomoko Kanazawa

I never knew why Kanatomo had to even join when she was going to be placed Juice=Juice in the first place, but damn as one of the older Kenshuuseis, she’s got the best vocals no doubt!  She’s got a lot of depth to her and she’s just looking to be a GREAT performer for H!P (might bypass a lot of current major H!P gals).

Reina Ichioka

As the kind of awkward, sexy gal from the 11th gen auditions, Reina popped up and sung “Samui ne.” from S/mileage.  To me, she here nor there for me and her performance didn’t really stick out in a good or bad way either.  Tsunku could really do anything with Reina though so that’s good…molding time!

Kaede Kaga

She’s been getting a push hasn’t she?  Kaedy is another Kenshuusei I’m looking out for because it seems like Tsunku might have some plan with her in the future.  Her test performance was of Berryz Koubou’s “Maji Bomber!!” and she also had to utilize a deeper tone to the song which was a nice change.  Honestly, she could’ve been in Berryz pulling that off and I’d be just fine because it really fit like a puzzle piece for her!  Another very impressive performance!

Yumeno Kishimoto

Just like Ichioka, Kishimon’s performance of Momosu’s “Waratte! YOU” was neither groundbreaking nor terrible for me as she was kind of just having fun with the song.  I guess the newer girls are just learning all the techniques.  Not much else to say about her right now, time will tell if she’ll make a better impression!

Maria Makino

Another performance I wasn’t too keen on, Maria took on another song that isn’t meant for solo performances, she took on Momosu’s “The☆Pea~ce!” and it really showed that she was having a tough time with the song, plus it didn’t help that Maria sounded distant from her mic a LOT of the time and also out-of-breath too.  It was a mess to be honest!

Sakurako Wada

Even though Tanapyon won the fans vote, the judges actually really liked her performance of S/mileage’s “Uchouten LOVE”.  Though listening to it, it makes you wonder how were they impressed…but it’s great to see these new Kenshuusei already standing out for different things.

Rikako Sasaki

The most recent addition to the Kenshuusei, Rikako had already impressed many people in the forums and such so we finally get to hear her sing S/mileage’s recent song “Watashi, Choito Kawaii Urabanchou” and lucky enough, it was another favorite performance of mine.  She sounded so clean and her vocals weren’t bad either!  I can see Tsunku utilizing her VERY quickly…

Also, add in that Tsunku announced 6 more members

  • Karen Tanaka
  • Manaka Inaba
  • Kana Mikame
  • Rio Fujii
  • Kana Mashiro
  • Hikaru Inoue

The only name I know of that list is of Rio Fujii because she stood out in the S/mileage auditions for her spazzy dancing and bull-headed personality…I wonder how much she changed and how well she’s doing now lol!
