H!P Profiles: ROMANS

Back Row L to R: Hitomi Saito, Rika Ishikawa, Ayaka Kimura
Front Row L to R: Mai Satoda and Mari Yaguchi

If there was a group that seemed a bit superfluous, ROMANS might be that group for me.  I mean I get they were made for a show they did and to show a more sexy and sensual side of H!P, but this kind of felt a little too tacky for me.  Granted you had Satoda, Boss Saito, Coconuts Ayaka, and Marippe who could sing and then Charmy (who I personally thought couldn’t sing much and was kind of there because she was considered the cutest member).  Oddly enough the group only lasted one single in and quickly disbanded.  Strange >.<

Style of Music: For being a sexy group, their song SEXY NIGHT was a sultry and classy song but set with an R&B sound (because Tsunku was really into R&B for some reason).  The B-side of their single, “Roman” was a bit more cutesy pop which totally went against the whole theme of the group, but it’s whatever. xD

  • SEXY NIGHT ~Wasurerarenai Kare~

So this is the A-side of the single, and I have to say I kind of wished they didn’t shaft Ayaka and Hitomi to be the MCs of the song (something disappointingly similar to 7AIR’s treatment).  The song is sexy and Rika, Mari, and Mai sound great but when the B-side had better line distribution, it just kind of makes you wonder lol.

Other Things To Mention

-The group was made for Sexy Onna Jyuku, which was a H!P program and since that ended the group also seem to fade into the annals of H!P history.

Overall: I wish there was more to this group than what they were given.  It was like an early version of v-u-den and all then, but ROMANS had a lot of talent!  I just wished they didn’t screw Hitomi and Ayaka up here because I personally think they should’ve took the reins alongside Mai and put Rika and Mari in the background, no offense xD.  I do like SEXY NIGHT though…it’s just quite smooth and very pretty (especially the lines from Satoda….holy craps xD

H!P Profile – Kaori Iida

Another 1st generation Morning Musume that went rogue and started her solo career (shortly after Nacchi did).  She was the member that stuck around Morning Musume the longest of course as well leaving in 2005 and all.  Of course everyone knows her as Johnson as that was her nickname through UTABAN of course and it stuck because Kaorin was very strange and yet intriguing at the same time lol.  Tall too xD.  She’s had some tragedy in her life when her first child past away, but she pulled through came back to performing with Dream Morning Musume and having a 2nd child, so yay hope things will go up for her!

Style of Music: If there was anything I wasn’t expecting ANYONE of Morning Musume to pull it was Mediterranean music (and at that a completely different languages) and here’s Kaori just pulling it off like it’s nobody’s business XD.  Café Music basically…and her first two albums were entirely either in Italian, French, or Greek while the latter two was 90% Japanese the other 10, French and Italian xD

  • Aegekai ni Dakarete
  • Door no Mukou de Bell ga Natteta

  • Osavurio ~Ai wa Matte Kurenai~
  • Paradinome ~Koi ni Mi wo Yudanete~
  • Avenir ~Mirai~
  • Plein d’Amour ~Ai ga Ippai~

This is Kaori’s first A-side single, “Aegekai ni Dakarete”, and gosh is this a pretty song and very suited for Kaori’s vocals!

Top 5 Favorite Songs

  • Aegekai ni Dakarete
  • IRRESISTIBLEMENT ~Anata no Toriko~i (album song from “Plein d’Amour ~Ai ga Ippai~)
  • Nakazu ni Irarenai Watashi Desu (B-side from “Door no Mukou de Bell ga Natteta”)
  • Cherbourg no Amagusa (album song from “Osavario ~Ai wa Matte Kurenai~”)
  • Souvenir (album song from “Avenir ~Mirai~)

Other Things to Mention

-Well, she’s currently the only H!P gal to really try to sing in a European language and release as a CD (her first two albums)

Overall: Kaori has always been the strange member and even as she dove into her solo career, the choices of genres and languages is something you don’t see quite often in the J-pop world let alone the idol world so props to her for stepping into something unique and refreshing (though I’m not sure how well she did in the languages she tackled, but I thought it was good enough).

H!P Profile – Natsumi Abe

Oh Nacchi!  Everyone should know this lady, she was one of the original five members to make up H!P XD.  Natsumi Abe is a legend to Morning Musume and was a face of them for quite a while (to the point that Furusato was “her” song).  She was always a lead somewhere in the song and even though many members became more popular than she had, she already made her mark by the time graduation came up in 2004 to focus on her solo career (which she begun a year earlier).  She also had some misfortune like plagiarizing, but that wasn’t too big of a deal right?  She’s done singles up to 2010 but has taken a break, but still be in the spotlight doing interviews and even coming together with already graduated members to form Dream Morning Musume!  At least until 2014 where Nacchi came back to music starting off with a self-cover album and a cover album altogether!

Style of Music: You know, Nacchi’s music was kind of like a softer mixture of both Gocchin and Ayaya’s sound.  You know light pop and R&B but not really going to stretch the outer limits of either…just kind of a safe middle for her and her light and airy vocals so it suited her well in the long run.

  • Haha to Musume no Duet Song (collaboration with Keiko Yosumi)
  • 22sai no Watashi
  • Datte Ikitekanakucha
  • Koi no Telephone GOAL
  • Yume Naraba
  • Koi no Hana
  • Takaramono (as Sen)
  • Sweet Holic

  • Amasugita Kajitsu
  • Too far away ~Onna no Kokoro~
  • Iki wo Kasanemashou
  • 16sai no Koi Nante (collaboration with Maimi Yajima)

  • Hitoribocchi
  • 2nd ~Shimiwataru Omoi~
  • 25 ~Vingt-Cinq~ (mini-album)
  • Abe Natsumi Best Selection ~15 Shoku no Nigaoe-tachi~ (best album)
  • Smile・・・♥ (self-cover album)
  • TOWARD THE LIGHT -Classical & Crossover- (cover album)

This is Nacchi’s official debut A-side (because she had a solo song that was on “Petit Best 1” and all).  It’s a peppy number and the collaboration between Nacchi and Keiko was really pleasant!

Of course this PV is of “Ameagari no Niji no You ni” which was Nacchi’s last single she’s released before going on her break.  It’s OK, but it feels like every single that Ayaya had released in her later years lol.

Other Things to Mention

-The only thing to really mention was that yes, in late 2004 she did have a plagiarizing incident with one of her songs “Nariyamai Tambourine” and she had to stop performing for a while…but said song is on her best album…odd right?

Overall: I have to say that Nacchi might have been light and airy for my tastes, but you can’t deny all that she’s put forth as an H!P member.  She’s very talented and she loves to do what she does.  I did miss her for quite a while and then she came back with a lighter sound that I was expecting.  Still has a lovely voice to this day!

Jeeze! this week has been crazy as hell… I mean through all the news it’s just mind boggling that Tsunku REALLY wants to be active…so shall we talk about the things here?

-First off Erina Mano has finally graduated.  I’ll miss her being the great soloist of win.  She definitely was growing into her skin and vocals.  She also finally released her first best and last album under H!P, “BEST FRIENDS” and oddly enough there doesn’t seem to be much of an opinion on the new tracks from people.  The new tracks aren’t bad, but they arent  epic unlike “Minna, Arigatou.”.  I hope ManoEri finds something great to do after H!P and I hope her passion of acting works as well.

-The newest group under H!P finally has a name and that’s Juice=Juice.  Yeah various blogs have talked about what are the girl’s colors/fruits are but I’ll pass for now xD.  They also announced their first indies single, “Watashi ga Iu Mae ni Dakishimenakya ne” and the live performance of it was pretty cool and had saxophones!  I wonder how the PV will look since they are indies and the song sounds quite upbeat.  From some reports they said Karin and Aina led which is amazing to hear since I love Aina!

-So SATOYAMA is continuing on as planned, Peaberry just released “Cabbage Hakusho” again but this time a “Spring” version with the classic “Shabondama” thrown into the arrangement.  Also soloist Asahi Tasaki and GREEN FIELDS are both releasing double A-side singles next.  Personally I’m with majority when I say…I WANT MORE DIY!!!!!

-Alongside SATOYAMA, they are now doing SATOUMI which is based on more like the ocean and keeping the waters clean.  Let’s talk about the new groups set for this movement!

  • Dia Lady (Risako & Airi) – I mean I kind of figured the main vocalists for both Kids units would lead this but how will this turn out is questionable since Rii’s vocals are kind of eh and Airi’s is just naturally good so this could go either way.
  • Plumeria (Nakky, Eripon, Kanyon, Maimai, and Ayu) – This group would’ve been great if they had left out the C-ute members to be honest and put in Rinapuu and maybe someone from Juice=Juice because all I see is a high voice assault with Plumeria (which is supposed to be a beautiful flower that’s graceful).  They might surprise me, but I doubt it.
  • Mellowquad (Miyabi, Chisato, Chinami, Maimi)  – Now this is where I think BS should be called because this group is basically DIY without the bad singers.  I mean Chisato is great and it’s super nice to see her appear but damn Tsunku use your other members…give Miyabi a damn break and use Maasa!!! or even Yurina!!

Overall, these groups don’t have the randomness or surprise factor that the SATOYAMA units do (or something like Alma xD).  I don’t know but I kind of wished Tsunku used more of the back members this time around…I mean a unit with Zukki, Rinapuu, Aarin, Maasa, Haruka….yeah that would be amazeballs!

-Of course there’s new stuff going around in H!P land like

-Morning Musume – A dance-shot version of “Brainstorming” was released and it’s a badass song with some epic new things like Harunan solo, epic Sakura lines, different Reina voice, and Riho not dying!  Yeah, even if the song is like a mash-up of various songs.  It’s definitely an A-side folks so I can’t WAIT for the actual PV.

-Berryz Koubou – Well they are releasing their single “Asian Celebration” and it’s not getting a lot of fanfare unlike their last couple of singles.  Not bad, but the song is kind of forgettable and the PV is a “Dakishimete Dakishimete” ripoff but they could do worse…and what’s this?  One of the B-sides is ANOTHER Thai cover from the same guy….jfc I’m here for it!

-C-ute – After the kind of ick that came from “Kono Machi”, they quickly announced a new single in “Crazy Kanzan na Otona” and from the live performance of it, it’s upbeat and danceable like “Kiss me Aishiteru”.  I quite like it and once again can’t wait for the PV!

-S/mileage – They just released the PV for “Tabidachi no Haru ga Kita” today and the song is just a bit plain.  It kind of reminded me of “Short Cut” but less so…I think.  It might have to grow on me (like many of the S/mileage songs do) but I think it’ll be a lukewarm song to me.

Well that’s it…unless there’s more news from the Hinamatsuri festivals…I think this is about it!
