H!P Profile: Rika Ishii

Rika Ishii is probably the epitome of back girl in Hello! Project and that’s no lie.  She started out as a soloist under the pseudonym “Peachy” before joining H!P and once she switched she kind of became this back girl of sorts.  She was involved in a lot of the odd albums like 5 of the 6 Douyou Pops (Children’s songs basically and sadly where Utaban gave her that nickname “That Children’s songs lady”), one of the FOLK SONGS albums, the Hawaiian Morning Musume album and appeared in a shuffle unit for the year she was active.  After that she kind of quietly backed down and started to release singles under her name and finally released her solo debut album in 2010.

Style of Music: As Peachy, Rika’s music kind of reminds me of like your typical idol pop music, but bright and happy which kind of stood out (plus the fact that it was good enough that Perfume covered “Super Jet Shoes” is pretty sweet as well.

Once she joined H!P, she didn’t really have anything for her own to pull which might be disappointing but the fact she was involved in all the side releases that made her the outcast of H!P roughly.  Her biggest showing was in a PV from one of the Douyou Pops, (Kamome no Suihei-san ) and her involvement in the shuffle groups.

Once her stint under H!P was up she went solo and her sound became much more toned down and mature.  It wasn’t surprising but it kind of reminded me of Ayaya for some reason!

The first PV is her second single, “Snow Paradise”…definitely sounds like it could’ve been released around Morning Musume with like the big songs since there’s a lot of disco flair about it.

Probably stated as the biggest appearance in an H!P video (even though she was in the Hawaiian mega-mix for Morning Musume and the Odoru11 PV) Rika was seen the most through “Kamome no Suihei-san” which was a song from Douyou Pops 3.

Last, but not least, here is the PV for “Wedding Story” which is a song from her first album.  It’s not as idol-like like her Peachy works but a bit more refined and focus on Rika’s vocals.

Other Things To Mention?

Rika to me is considered the last of the classic girls since the next group is the start of the H!P Kids and Gomattou.

Like Miyoshi Chinatsu, she disappeared quietly into obscurity.

Though she left a good mark on Utaban on the shuffle unit special as “That Children’s Songs Lady” which is true as she explained since she was featured on 5/6 of the H!P Childrens albums

Overall: Another one of the ladies that I’m a bit more curious about to as how she became an H!P girl, Rika Ishii probably should’ve had more than what she ended up with in H!P because she had one of the better vocals at the time.  Supposedly according to Utaban, she was an office lady of sorts and was asked if she wanted to do Kids’ songs and that’s how she ended up there.  I found that it was nice that Tsunku was able to let her do a shuffle unit (even if I had a hard time picking out who was who in said unit >.>).  I’m happy she continued on with music and from the songs I’ve heard from “Aoi Kuma” she still sounds STRONG.

YUP, that is the winner of the 11th Generation right there, Sakura Oda!!!!  Who knew that the choice that I would’ve picked got the golden ticket.  Oh and she got a special video having this been told she joined!

Even as an added bonus, her singing “Namida ga Tomaranai Houkago” is so good…like really Tsunku made an amazing choice here (especially for passing up Sara Murakami of the last auditions).  Her reaction was a little slow, but she looked so surprised after it kind of settled in.  Now people have said that she won a lottery game where she got to see Momusu at practice and I guess that led her into the group further… the question now becomes will there be anymore girls once the tour starts.  My bet is maybe, but if this is ALL we get….then I’m good as well because besides Haruka, none of the other girls seemed strong enough.  Though a one-girl generation has been risky….(Koharu & Aika come to mind) and there’s also Gocchin who got lucky.

So the 11th Generation Finalists appear…hmmmm

(credits to OrAcioN_Sies for this helpful photo)

So up above are the 6 finalists out of 9000 applicants for the audition.  I’ll be honest I was kind of hoping for 10 girls and not 6 (even though 6 were left for the 9th Gen auditions but still!)  So what do I think of the girls well let’s find out!

EDITS: Well, the SATOYAMA episode was put up and now I can talk a smidge more about them!

1. Ayano Hamaura – I thought I’d start with the more well-known girls first.  Hamachan to me is still pretty young and while she’s super cute (the first photo that came out after she joined the Kenshuusei was SOOOO ADORABLE) she’s not what I’d call a Suppin Utahime…her voice is still pretty squeaky and I think maybe she’s just out of place?  I don’t know but she kind of strikes me as the lovechild of Erina’s voice and Masaki’s cuteness.  I’d be ok with her joining, but she’s not going to be a head vocalist IMO.

After hearing her on SATOYAMA, I’m still kind of thinknig that she is a bit squeaky and her voice reminds me of Yuukarin’s who I’m not a big fan of….Yeah…this isn’t good, but she is quite popular so that might work to her favor…

2. Sakura Oda – When I see her Kenshuusei pictures, Sakura always looks weird compared to the other members which makes her stand out, but not so much in a good way.  HOWEVER, of the 6…I definitely see her as a perfect selection for Utahime status.  She sounds great as a singer and would bring something new to the table for Momusu…what that might be yet is unclear but I think she sounds better than Riho LOL

Yup, Sakura is definitely one that Tsunku should NOT pass on because this girl can sing and she has power behind her voice.  I love how SATOYAMA showed footage of her at the S/mileage auditions and then the change was almost a total 180 now.  Funny, with her hair down she kind of reminds me of Iida-san for some reason…I want her in so badly!

3. Haruka Ono – I’m not too familar with NGP so I’m not sure what they have in talent-wise (except THE Possible, even though they are signed under Victor now) but as a NGP Kenshuusei, Haruka already has a better chance (like Sakura and Hamachan) to get in because of her status and ability.  From what I’ve heard, she’s actually quite nice of a voice and I think her and Sakura would make a great duo…..THE ONLY THING that might be unsettling is that she’s 16…(Harunan needs a friend though sooooo).

From SATOYAMA. what I said above about Haruka still stands as she does mostly singing.  I like it quite a bit and she flows quite smoothly so this helps her quite a bit.  Nothing else to really point out.

4. Reina Ichioka – From first glance, Reina (oh lord another Reina) isn’t a bad looking girl but I personally think she’s the weakest singer of the 6 which might set her back.  Though she’s a previous model which might fit what the generations have been doing recently (a dancer, a an egg/kenshuusei, a model, and a girl with no previous work.  Who knows at this point.

On SATOYAMA, we didn’t get to see Reina sing which is a bit meh, but we got to see her dance and using sexy dance moves might be something Tsunku saw because while Ayumi and Riho are dynamic and power dancers, Reina takes more of a sexier vibe and that could help but she’s so darn thin and lanky…it makes me wonder if anything is going to come out of this.  She also needs quite a bit of training, but this raw and unhinged talent might come in handy ^_^

5. Yumeno Kishimoto – I’m not exactly sure why, but this girl is kind of ehhhhh.  I don’t find much pleasure listening to her so far and she kind of ranks with Hamachan as that she’s rather too inexperienced for this level.  Though her as a potential Kenshuusei member would be pretty good for her seeing that she does have talent.

With Yumemo on SATOYAMA, it’s like she trying and I liked that about her, but her voice doesn’t seem very stable to me and kind of goes off pitch a lot compared to the other girls.  I would say that she still could get more training as a Kenshuusei member but I don’t think she’ll make it and if she does, then I’ll be surprised (perhaps be the project girl?)

6. Maria Makino – There’s not much to say since we only got a small snippet of her singing a word.  I can’t say much about her sadly.  She is sort of cute in a way, but I don’t know

We got a little more to go by from SATOYAMA and to be honest, she’s kind of the loner here.  I mean she’s cute but not as cute as Hamachan and her vocals are kind of average…but she lacks the emotion in the way she sings which is pretty difficult to enjoy.  I don’t think she’ll get in right now because of this.

As you can tell, I’m not really thrilled on the finalists to be honest (and seriously we could’ve had more with how many applicants were had AND the fact there was so much more talent involved here like Hinako Oogami and Karin Miyamoto.  It’s just weird that these 6 were chosen to go on.  Of the 6, I really think Sakura and Haruka should pass.  Anyone else would be extra icing but the other 4 don’t really seem to fit the quota of Suppin Utahime (I wonder if they ditched it…..Plus I haven’t seen the dance portion so I wanna know if the four can redeem themselves in that respect.
